Hop Planting Season MARCH - MAY
The hop plant (Humulus lupulus) is a perennial that produces climbing annual vines from a perennial crown and rootstock. The stems or vines may grow 25 feet in a single season but will die back to the crown each fall. In addition to the true roots and aerial stems, the crown also produces underground rhizomes. Rhizomes possess numerous buds and are used for propagation in order to maintain the genetically identical traits of the mother plant. The rootstock of the Hop plants are long lived and some plantations have been found to reach ages of over 50 years.

All Rhizomes offered by Freshops are female.

Hops are native to many parts of the world and different varieties have been found growing anywhere from desert locations to 7000 ft. elevations. Your ability to grow hops is usually not limited by your location on earth, The health of the vine is more dependent on the grower's ability to provide proper growing conditions and care. Under good conditions, hops are a prolific vine and will be a joy to grow and utilize. Vigorous varieties will produce as much as 2 lbs. of dried flowers per plant. When grown next to a house or greenhouse, the vine provides a nice seasonal shade against summer sun.

As the female flower matures, it forms a cone-like structure. The mature hop cones are 1 to 3 inches long, yellowish green, and papery to the touch. The cones are generally harvested in August and September, dried and then used for whatever brewing, medicinal, or ornamental purpose you desire.

Quarantine restrictions:

Due to the detection of hop powdery mildew in Washington state in 1997 a hop disease quarantine is in effect. The quarantine prevents importation of hop plants from all areas outside the territorial borders  of Washington.

Please note! Idaho has 2 counties we can't ship to:
